Problemy zagrożenia porostów w Polsce [Problems of threatened lichenized fungi in Poland]
Krystyna Czyżewska, Stanisław Cieśliński
TIle cause and effect of lichenized fungi (lichens) extinction and threat based on the red list, is analyzed. Every 25th species on the list of the Polish lichens is extinct, every 9th is endangered, and every 13th is vulnerable. The degree of threat of the epiphytic, epixylous, terrestrial. and epilithic lichens is discussed. The changes among lichens encountered in forests. towns. industrial regions. national parks and nature reserves are shown.

Historia botaniki na tle współczesnego naukoznawstwa [History of botany on the background of contemporary science of science]
Alicja Zemanek
THe science of science – an interdisciplinary branch of knowledge searching for the rules of development of science, includes three areas of specialization: theory of science (philosophy, psychology and sociology of science), history of science and practical problems of scientific policy. The history of botany is rather an uncommon field of scientific specialization. It comprises studies on the history of botanical ideas, particular branches of botany, botanical nomenclature, botanical institutions. expeditions. herbaria, biographies of botanists. etc. The founder of the history of botany as a separate branch of scientific investigations in Poland was J6zef Rostafiński (1850-1928), an author of classical papers on medieval and Renaissance botany. Now three periodicals on the science of science and four periodicals on the history of science (including botany) are being published in Poland.

Ocena podobieństw i różnic między zbiorowiskami glonów glebowych. Metoda hierarchicznej analizy skupień [Eslimation of likeness and diversity between soil algal community. Hierarchical cluster analysis method]
Dorota Sieminiak, Antoni Miller, Remigiusz Szymański
Three sites (Laskowice, Rogaczewo, Balcyny) separated by about 250-350 km were investigated from April 1976 to November 1977: three rye fields and sugar-beet field. Modificated Braun-Blanquet method and hierarchical cluster analysis to estimate algal quantity and to compare soil algal communities was applied. Quadrats were sampled at each site by collecting 2 mm thickness of soil surface. The representative sample was trated in a flask with liquid medium. Algal presence and cover in the samples was estimated from 3-5 slides prepared according to modificated Braun-Blanquet method. Sorensen’s and Jaccards coefficients calculated for each field was also applied. The results of both calculations are similar.

Mechanizmy tolerancyjności na toksyczne działanie jonów glinu u roślin wyższych [Mechanisms of aluminium tolerance in higher plants]
Jan J. Ślaski
Aluminium toxicity is the main plant growth limiting factor in acid soils of pH below 5.0. There are interspecies as well as intraspecies differences in plant response to aluminium toxicity. In this review mechanisms of aluminium tolerance in higher plants are presented including: external strategies (pH barrier in the rhizosphere, extracellular binding of Al ions, immobilization on the cell wall, penneability of plasma membrane) and internal mechanisms (chelation of Al ions in the cytosol, interaction with Ca and P, differences in NAD+kinase activity).

Oddziaływanie par smołowych i pakowych na rośliny [The effect of tar and peach vapours on plants]
Bronisław Wyżgolik
Tar and peach vapours emited by cockery plants and using this material are one of the most harmful air pollutants. The compounds of tar and peach get into the atmosphere as volatile substances and condense on the surface of various objects in the form of microscopic droplets. The first symptoms is a glossy an abaxial surface of leaves and their epinasty. Later white or brown spots appear on the leaves. Under microscope it can be seen that and these places the epidermal cells colaps. Scanning microscope image injured leaves show different morphological changes. The plant species fumigated by different tar fraction indicate higher water loss and decreased assimilation of CO2.

Słownik terminów botanicznych – wstępne założenia redakcyjne [Dictionary of botanical terms – preamble edition ideas]
Janusz B. Faliński
Dictionary of Botanical Terms should be perceived as one of many publications very important and indispensable for the whole botanical society in Poland. Hence its thematic and functional range should be reflected on the background of the whole range of botany. Preliminary editorial assumptions of the Dictionary of Botanical Terms were formulated by the author of this paper and were proposed and discussed in the meeting of the Botanical Commitee of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw on 28 January 1992. Preliminary editorial assumptions of the Dictionary of Botanical Terms are constructed in this way that they show alternative solutions of the majority of questions and arising from them implications on a lower level of decisions. After presenting and discussing of many concepts and possibilities the author of the ..Preliminary editorial assumptions..” declares for the preparing of a compact dictionary comprising as full as possible set of terms from all branches of botany with indispensable terms common for all biological sciences. The dictionary is intended for students and scientists working in pure and applied botany and related sciences. Total number of main and additional entries: 10-20 thousand, in alphabetical order, with an extensive system of indexes (and with a ultimate index in the case of acceptance of alternative sectional order). The entries comprise the univocal terms generally defined with the supply of more important meanings in different branches of botany, with synonyms, their analogues in English and Latin (only morphology), and ethymology. The Dictionary should be prepared by a team of specialists (c. 10 branches, 1-2 authors of entries and 1-2 reviewers in each branch), under a common scientific editor and with the co-operation of a lexicographer. Final editorial assumptions must also contain a full list of entries, typical ..exemplary entries”, ..exemplary figures” and ..exemplary indexes”, etc. In terminological dictionaries the recurrent and growing schemes play an important role, i.e. ones which may be used many times, and where the discussed element (term) will be differentiated each time with black or other colour. The importance and urgency of the task requires its preparation and execution by specially organized teams: Commitee of Botanical Terminology and the Editorial Commitee of the Dictionary. They should be appointed by the Botanical Commitee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Botanical Society, under the general auspices of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Kłopoty z kłokoczką [Troubles with Staphylea pinnata L.]
Andrzej Środoń
Bladder-nut Staphylea pinnata L., as Hendrych (1980) proved, is an alien element of Czechoslovakian flora. This statement concerns also northernmost part of its range S. Poland, where it has been treated so far as a native species. Fossils of genus Staphylea, known in Poland from many localities are of tertiary age (Tab. 1, Fig. 1). They haven’t been found in quaternary floras so far, excluding occasional contamination of the profiles with tertiary material. The present distribution of this species has been undoubtedly effected by its earlier planting close to the human settlements. Further archeobotanical and paleobotanical studies are needed to establish primary distribution of Staphylea pinnata and to explain its history and status in the Polish flora.
