Kolonizacja lądu przez pierwsze rośliny telomowe [The colonisation of land by the first telome plants]
Wojciech Mikołuszko
The differences between water and land environment are tremendous. Therefore the first telome plants only appeared over 400 million years ago. The most important of them, ancestral to other telome plants, are now placed into three groups: the rhyniophytes, zosterophyllophytes and trimerophytes. They survived as a result of forming water conducting tissue, rhizomes with rhizoids, epidermis covered with cuticle, stomata, spores resistant to desiccation and sporangia with special dehiscence mechanism. Their evolution had the character of adaptive radiation.

Aktualne problemy badań nad aparatami szparkowymi [Recent problems of stomata investigations]
Stanisław Maleszewski, Bożena Kozłowska-Szerenos
Current stomata investigation focuses on egzo- and endogenous stimuli reception, intracellular signal transduction, metabolism and transmembrane transport connected with the guard cells movement. The function of C02 assimilation and the specific effect of the blue irradiation as well as the role of stomata in the interaction between plants and their environment are still the actual topics. Recently the attention is also paid to phenomenon of the heterogeneity in stomatal characteristics on a single leaf.

Brasinosteroidy – hormony roślinne [Brassinosteroids – the phytohormons]
Krystyna Maria Janas
Brassinosteroids (BRs) occur in the plant kingdom and are naturally occuring plant hormones. They have a range of effects which can be distinguished from those of recognised hormones, especially in the promotion of young vegetative growth. The pleiotropic effects of the BR-insensitive and BR-deficient Arabidopsis and pea mutations on leaf morphology, pollen fertility, light development, and cell elongation suggest that BRs are an important class of plant hormones. It seems that control of BRs levels is essential for normal growth via auxin-independent mechanism. BRs also interact with environmental signals such as light and temperatures.

Odżywianie się roślin wyższych wapniem [Calcium nutrition of higher plants]
Paweł Wójcik
The current knowledge on calcium nutrition of higher plants is reviewed. Calcium deficiency in plant tissues causes many physiological disorders which lead to significant losses in plant production. Particularly, severe symptoms of calcium deficiency are observed in intensive plant production. Calcium shortage in plants is related to poor calcium ion uptake, its limited movement to above-ground parts of plant and strong competition about calcium between leaves and generative plant parts (fruits, seeds). In this paper some factors related to soil and plant biology influencing calcium uptake by plants are discussed.

Rola wapnia w fitotoksyczności sodu [The role of calcium in sodium phytotoxicity]
Paweł Wójcik, Marzena Wójcik
The high sodium content in soil solution is the factor having great importance in reduction of plant production. Na+ uptake across the plasma membrane is very fast resulting in physiological effects on extracellular as well as intracellular sites. Sodium reduces binding of calcium ions to the plasma membrane, inhibits influx and increases efflux of Ca2+ and depletes the internal stores of Ca2+ from endomembranes. The changes in the cell Ca2+ homeostasis cause many physiological and biochemical reactions leading to: plant growth reduction, cell division disturbance, change in growth substances action, cell elongation inhibition and calcium transport limitation in plants. It seems that Ca2+ as a second messenger plays a main role in sodium phytotoxicity.

Rola kwasu jasmonowego i jego estru metylowego we wzroście i rozwoju roślin [The role of jasmonic acid and its methyl ester in the growth and development of plants]
Bożena Białecka, Jan Kępczyński
Jasmonic acid (JA) and its methyl ester (JA-Me) are endogenous plant growth regulators. JA-Me is known as major aroma component in the oil of Jasminum grandiflorum and Rosmarinus officinalis, JA was isolated for the first time from the culture filtrate of the fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae. In recent years, using different methods, jasmonates are found to be widespread in the plant kingdom. These compounds exert both inhibitory and promoting effects at various morphological, physiological, cellular and molecular levels. Jasmonates inhibit germination of non-dormant seeds, elongation of stem and root, callus growth or photosynthesis. JA or JA-Me promote seed dormancy releasing, fruit ripening, senescence and abscission. In plants treated with jasmonates was observed accumulation of specific abundant proteins resembles the response of plant cells to certain external stresses such as elevated temperatures, wounding and pathogens.

Skład chemiczny igiet sosny zwyczajnej Pinus sylvestris L. w regionie Świętokrzyskim [Chemistry of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) L. needles in the Holy Cross Mountains region (south-central Poland)]
Zdzisław M. Migaszewski
The paper presents results of studies on basic concentrations of major and trace elements (AI, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Si, Sr, Ti i Zn), sulphur stable isotopes and organic compounds in Pinus sylvestris L. needles of different age (1993, 1994 and 1995) from Holy Cross Mountain National Park versus the remaining part of the Holy Cross Mts. The content of sulphur and manganese is a concern in some parts of the region. The three-year old pine needles contained higher concentrations of AI, Ba, Ca, Fe, Hg, Mn, Na, Sr, Ti, and somewhat Pb and Zn in comparison to those in the one-year old pine needles; in turn, the latter showed a distinct increase of Cu, Mg, Ni, P, and partly K. The spatial distribution pattern of elements and sulphur isotopes based on ANOVA has been given. A comparison in elemental and isotopic composition of the three-year old pine needles and the bark has also been made. This unique investigation is ongoing and includes other media, i.e., soils, lichens, spring waters and industrial material (stack dust, coal, coke, limestone) derived from localhfacilities.
