Kredowe okrzemki słodkowodne [Cretaceous freshwater diatoms]

The freshwater Late Cretaceous diatoms have been just discovered in chert layers in Mexico (Beraldi-Campesi et al. 2004). Well preserved assemblages of colonies of species belonging to the extant genera (Melosira, Fragilaria. Tabellaria, Amphora) were studied in thin sections. This finding connects the middle Eocene paleontological records of nonmarine diatoms with almost forgoten the preCretacous ones.

Historia badań botanicznych w powiecie olkuskim. Część II: lata 1945-2002 [History of the botanical research within the Olkusz district. Part 2: 1945-2002]

After 1945 a rapid decline in population of Cochlearia polonica was observed. Despite many efforts put into saving its natural sites and habitats. the endemic species became extinct in the wild; last specimen was observed in 1994. C. polonica was, however, successfully transplanted into replacement sites. Some new findings enriched the list of Olkusz region vascular flora, especially Cvclamen purpurascens, Lunaria rediviva and Cypripedium calceolus, all discovered in the 1950s. Since 1968. a significant rise in the number and intensity of basic Floristic exploration and geobotanical research within this area has warranted for evaluation of both local biodiversity and vegetation. Several rare species (Tab. 1) retreated from the mentioned area. Numerous objects were proposed as areas of legal protection (Fig. 1). Since 1955 the population of C. colceolus has been saved and is being monitored in a specially established nature reserve ..Michałowiec”. Up to now large areas of major landscape values have been protected as well as a few monuments of nature while most of the other proposed objects still wait for the proper decision. At this time groundless in ecological terms but persistent efforts of afforestation threaten the unique vegetation of zinc mine spoils near Bolesław.
