Człowiek i roślina (Rozmyślania pod wierzbą o botanikach w niecodziennej roli) [Man and plant (Meditating under the willow tree about botanists in unusual roles)]

The author endeavoured to show the various relationships of man and plants. However, he was not concerned with our direct advantages from exploitation and growing of plant resources. The author has proposed the reader to trace the feelings and experiences of a simple man, a scientist and an artist who face the richness, diversity and mysteries of the world of plants. Human expectations regarding plants and attempts to give some species and forms symbolic meaning are discussed. Setting aside the mystical view of plants, we cannot, nonetheless, set aside all that they have given and still give man. Effective metaphors, richness of our experiences, the same feelings in various epochs and on various continents, alive tradition, emotion of discovery by botanists and amateur naturalists – these are just a few thoughts worth mentioning at such uncommon occasion as the General Meeting of the Polish Botanical Society. The author would like that this reach beyond the rigors of botanical science be also an occasion to everyone to remember his or her own interests and reasons of choosing this particular way of life. Botany, sciencia amabilis, is a product of our choices and passions, personal imagination and success. Today, if anythink could bring together people, who had divided the indivisible plant into a great number of elements and subjects of study, it is the plant as a whole, and all that we experience and try to understand while communing with plants day by day as well as during unusual situations.

Łagiewka pyłkowa w tkankach słupka [Pollen tube growth in the pistil]

The progamic phase is a period of the pollen tube growth from the stigma, through the pistil tissues to the embryo sac. The effective growth of the pollen tube to the ovule is crucial for the fertilization. During this period selection of the pollen tube genotypes occurs, what has great influence on progeny of the plant and practically on fruit and seed crop. The knowledge about the progamic phase is important to biologists and plant breeders as well, but still physiological mechanism of the processes undergoing between pollen tube and pistil are unexplained. Some enzymes (peroxidase, specific RNA-ase) or glicoproteids are considered as substances involved in recognition, promotion or inhibition of the pollen tube growth. The problem of the pollen tube nutrition during its growth is not clear till now. Very interesting process of the recognition and attraction of specific genotypes from the female and male gametophytes was proved in the experiments, but its mechanism remains obscured. All these problems are intensely investigated and present paper combines some of the new reports concerning the progamic phase.

Komputerowy program filosocjologiczny FITO [The computer programme FITO for phytosociological studies]

This paper performing the duties and the range of application of the integrated phytosociological computer’s programme FITO. This programme enables making vegetation tables and basic statistics – mathematical counts used in the floristics – phytosociological works (tab. 1,2,3). Programme F1TOcontains: subprogramme BANK I (catalogue of species) attendance of the catalogue of species BANK I, used to record and accumulation the latin names of plants, and data about their ecological index of numbers and syntaxonomic affiliation. subprogramme BANK 2 (catalogue of records) used with the help of data from the catalogue of species – BANK I to record and acculation the data of phytosociological record; subprogramme EDIT (edition and ranking) of tables and ranking list of species count with is make in use data from the catalogue of records BANK 2. Programme FITO is free, available to get at the Warsaw Agricultural University.

Roślinność piargów wysokogórskich: ekologia i zróżnicowanie [Vegetation of high mountain screes – ecology and differentiation]

Extensive scree fields are a common feature of every high mountain area. Most of them are of moraine origin, others, more recent, are the results of rock-weathering. They form a habitat which is not suitable for plants because many environmental factors reach their extreme values here. It concerns, above all, unstable ground, poorly developed soil and difficult water conditions. Screes vary considerably with respect to movement abilities (active, slipping and stable scree), granulation (block, coarse and fine screes), a kind of bedrock which they have originated from (limestone-screes and silicate-screes) etc. All of them offer different habitats for plants. In order to thrive in such an unfavourable biotope plants have developed various kinds of adaptations, such as: efficient means of dispersal, ability of quick reestablishment after being covered up by scree, drought resistance and different growth forms. They exhibit different types of life strategies as well. On slipping scree slopes an equilibrium between the plant colonization rate and the stones supply rate is to be observed. If stone fall is ceased, succession of vegetation begins. Usually it leads to a climax community of a given altitudinal zone. The example from the Tatra Mts is displayed in fig. I. All the scree plant associations of the Central European mountains have been included in the Thlaspeerea rotundifolii class (see fig. 3). This class consists of four orders, each of them having certain habitat requirements as regards substratum, namely: Thlaspeetalia rotundifolii – limestone, Androsacetalia alpinae – silicate substratum, Drabetalia hoppeanae calcareous slates, Arabidetalia coeruleae – moist calcareous gravel. Further division of orders is related mostly to differences in altitude and substratum moisture. Scree flora and vegetation in the Tatra Mts is poorer in comparison with the Alps. Several syntaxa were reported to have been found in the Alps that do not occur in the Tatras. It results from a lesser extent of areas above the timberline in the Tatras, a smaller surface covered by screes and a lesser habitat diversity. Nevertheless, the scree vegetation of the Tatras has gotsome unique features. It concerns mostly endemic species, which are components of scree associations in the Tatras, such as: Saxifraga perdurans (Saxijragetum perdurantis), Delphinium oxysepalum (Papaveri-Cerastietum), Saxifraga carpatica, Cochlearia Tatrae iOxyrio-Saxifragetum carpaticae). Several pairs of vicariant associations are to be pointed out, e.g. Silenetum alpinae (Tatras) (fig. 4) – Petasitetum paradoxi (Alps), Papaveri-Cerastietum (Tatras) – Thlaspeetum rotundifolii(Alps), Oxyrietum digynae (Alps) – Oxyrio-Saxifragetum carpaticae (Tatras) (fig. 2). Scree vegetation is a convenient subject for ecological investigations. One can study plant adaptations and strategies, their ranges of ecological tolerance, influence of limiting factors on plant life and a vegetation succession rate. The results of such surveys can be used e.g. to fix scree slopes of anthropogenic origin and to protect mountain touristic paths from being covered by stone debris.

Haploidyzacja roślin wyższych i jej zastosowanie [Haploidization of higher plants and its application]

The paper presents the results obtained untill the present day in higher plants haploidyzation. Special attention has been focused on the processes on which haploidization techniques are based. Most attention has been paid to the methods based on apomixis. In addition to this a general description of haploid induction by eliminating chromosomes from hybrid embryo and somatic tissue in vitro culture, by in vitro androgenesis have been done. Haploid induction and production methods having been described. possibilities of using haploid plants in genetics, breding and taxonomic sciences are discussed.

Metody pomiaru wolnego wapnia i ich praktyczne zastosowanie w fizjologii i cytologii roślin [Methods of free calcium measurement and their practical application in plant physiology and cytology]

In both animals and plants calcium plays a vital role as an intracellular second messenger. Inside resting cells free cytosolic calcium ([Ca2+]c) is maintained at very low levels. being about 10 000 times less concentrated than in the environment. After stimulation of an eukaryotic cell a rapid increase in [Ca2+]c is reported. The development of new methods for measuring free calcium initiated a revolution in the study of cellular Ca2+ homeostasis in animals. In contrast to animal cells in which the measurement of [Ca2+]c is widely practiced, the determination of free cytosolic calcium in plants is much more difficult. In this paper some of the problems encountered in measuring [Ca2lc in plant cells are discussed. There are many different methods used for the determination of free cytosolic Ca2+ and photoproteins, calcium fluorescence dyes and Ca2+ – sensitive microelectrodes are all commonly used. Over the past two decades photoproteins (especially aequorin) have been applied to the measurement of [Ci+]c in animals. In this paper the molecular properties of the photoproteins used and their application for free calcium measurement in plant cells are outlined. More recently calcium fluorescent dyes have proved the most suitable for determining of [Ca2+]c, both in resting and stimulated cells. Detailed information concerning chemical structures and physico-chemical properties of the dyes are also presented in this paper. Finally, the fabrication. calibration and application of calcium-selective microelectrodes in plant science is also described.

Pompy protonowe plazmalemmy i tonoplastu [Proton pumps in plasma membrane and tonoplast]

Proton pumps, a specific group of membrane enzymes are involved in the transduction of energy in cells. They used the energy released during a hydrolysis of chemical bonds to the vectorial proton transport across membranes and generate an electrochemical proton gradient. H+ gradient established by pumps is then used as a driving force for nutrient transport in cell. In last decade the proton pumps of plant membranes were intensively studied at the biochemical and molecular level. Achievements of these study and current ideas concerning the regulation of both plasma membrane (H+-ATPase) and tonoplast (V-ATPase and PPiase) proton pumps are presented.

Historia roślinności w zachodniej części Kotliny Sandomierskiej w czasie ostatnich 15 000 lat [History of vegetation in the western part of Sandomierz Basin during the last 15 000 years]

The subject of this study is the history of vegetation in the western part of Sandomierz Basin from the turn of the last glacial until historical times. The human impact on the vegetation was recorded since the Neolithic. The pollen diagrams have shown the landscape changes from treeless tundra through open pine forests till mixed deciduous forests with oak, elm, lime, ash and hazel, and later with hornbeam and beech. During the last stage of forest history the pine forests degraded by man become dominant forest communities but they occupied smaller and smaller areas, and open places were used for agricultural activity.
