Pięć wieków wymiany flor synantropijnych między Starym i Nowym Światem [Five centuries of exchange of synanthropic flora between the Old and the New World]
Jan Kornaś
The 500th anniversary of the first Christopher Columbus journey to America (in 1492) brings to mind – among other things – the high geobotanical importance of this fact. It opened the possibilities of migrations of plants and animals between Europe (with Asia) and the New World. The exchange of species through the Ocean includes useful plants introduced intentionally, and a great number of species introduced accidently by various means of transportation. The author discusses the consequences of those migrations and some general rules connected with them: exchange of synanthropic plants between the regions with analogous climatic conditions, the higher number of introduced species in North America than in Europe, particular biological features of migrating species, sites of their settlement and dependence upon anthropogenic disturbances, processes of adaptive evolution. In the conclusion the importance of investigations concerning the exchange of components of synanthropic flora between Europe and America is discussed.

Roślinność – strefy przejścia i granice [Vegetation – transitional zones and boundaries]
Halina Ratyńska, Wojciech Szwed
Recently an increase of interest in transitional zones and boundaries is observed. This article presents the review of literature giving the definitions, opinions and trends of investigations, especially of transitional zones and boundaries between plant communities, their complexes and units of geocomplexes (“a structure composed of elements and of relations between them. It is not considered synonimous with ecosystem, but as a carrier or linkage of ecosystems. It can be described further by its external appearance, internal biological, chemical and physical processes, and the intera – and interactions of internal and external properties, plus the cultural, e.g. technical, input of man.” [11]). At present, one treats ecotone as a transition zone between ecological systems. Such organizations can have a zonal or mosaic character. The other form of spatial system, with not sharp outlines, characterized by a transitional stage between neighbouring communities, is ecocline. And the vegetation continuum is treated as an uninterrupted population sequence, but not as a mosaic of separate units. This review does not enclose the whole problem of boundaries and transitional zones but gives the overview of the topic.

Ewolucja strategii życiowych Glomales [Evolution of life stiategies in Glomales]
Ewa Ślusarczyk
The paper presents an overview on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi from the point of life strategies. The hypotheses on the origin of the mutualistic symbiosis between plants and fungi are presented and discussed. According to them the arbuscular mycorrhiza arose from the symbiotic contact of two partners that was either parasitic or saprophytic. The consequences of the lack of sexuality in fungal symbiont are discussed.

Mutanty fotomorfogenetyczne [Photomorphogenic mutants]
Agnieszka Nowakowska, Andrzej Tretyn
The phytochrome is the photoreceptor responsible for initiating many of the photomorphogenic events. The signal transduction pathways, leading from the perception of light to the modification of gene expression have been relatively unknown until recently, when several types of mutants have been introduced for studies on plant photomorphogenesis. So far a few types of phytochrome mutants have been characterised: between them mutants probably deficient in all types of phytochrome (so-called chromophore mutants), as well as labile (phyA) or stabile (phyB) phytochrome deficient mutants. Other type of photomorphogenic mutants exhibit exaggerated phytochrome responses. Recently mutants which possesses light-grown phenotypes in darkness were also identified.
