Fitogeograficzne aspekty endemizmu w Polsce [Phytogeographic aspects of endemism in Poland]
Zbigniew Mirek, Halina Piękoś-Mirkowa
This paper summarizes the knowledge on endemism of vascular plants in Poland. Altogether 169 endemic species have been distinguished. Most of them represent two families Asteraceae and Rosaceae – 44 species each one. Patterns and size of general distribution and their altitudinal ranges are characterized. Endemic species are very unevenly distributed in the country and majority of them are mountain species (83%) concentrated in the highest massives of the Carpathian Mts (108 taxa) and Sudety Mts (33 taxa). Only 30 species are limited to administrative borders of Poland; the other exceed in some degree frontiers of the country. Review of the main categories of endemics distinguished is provided.

Toksyny syntetyzowane przez morskie glony [Toxins synthesized by sea algae]
Jan Białczyk, Zbigniew Lechowski, Beata Bober
The blooms of sea water caused by certain algae (dinoflagellates, diatoms, red algae) appears widely regardless of the geographic zone. These are producers of numerous secondary metabolites, often with a toxic effect on animals and humans. The accumulation of these compounds in the bodies of animals living in a shelf zone and living off phytoplankton (e.g. bivalves, clams, cockles, oysters, scallops, mussels, crabs, fishes) is the cause of some cases of food poisoning in people, for whom they constitute a primary source of nutrition. Besides these compounds are through algae secreated into the water environment and in the form of an aerozol or through direct contact with the skin may enter into the organism during work at sea, swimming or surfing. The symptoms of poisoning caused by toxins synthesized by sea algae has been divided into five groups depending on the effects exerted: paralytic (e.g. saxitoxin), amnesic (ocadaic acid), diarrhea and other gastric problems (e.g. azaspiracid, domoic acid), neurotoxic (e.g. brevetoxin, macrocyclic imines) and various effects including a tumour promoting activity (e.g. yessotoxin, pectenotoxin). The article describes the chemical structure of toxins, the physico-chemical features, the mechanism of action as well as the characteristics of organisms capable of their synthesis.

Zastosowanie GIS i teledetekcji w badaniach szaty roślinnej [Applications of GIS and remote sensing in vegetation research]
Michał Zarzecki, Andrzej Pasierbiński
Since 1972 scientists have access to a new source of environmental data which is remote sensing initiated by Landsat 1 satellite. Satellite or aerial imagery provided by remote sensing equipment has many applications ranging from map rendering, prediction and estimation of disaster effects to investigation of vegetation. After Landsat 1 new platforms and sensors emerged together with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as the technological development has been proceeding. GIS are computer systems aiding spatial data management and analysis. It allows to incorporate diverse digital and analogue data, e.g. GPS coordinates, maps and environmental data. Remote sensing of vegetation utilizes mainly electromagnetic radiation from visible and infrared bands. Due to absorption of red and blue light for photosynthesis and high reflectance of infrared light by spongy mesophyll, vegetation can be distinguished on remotely sensed image by means of mathematical operations yielding so-called Vegetation Indices, e.g. NDVI. Vegetation Indices are significantly correlated with percentage vegetation cover, crop yields and plant vigor. In remote sensing of vegetation various sensor types are used – aerial photos or satellite images provide different scale of spatial and spectral detail, hence they are used in different types of research. Remote sensing and GIS are powerful tools for vegetation mapping, invasive alien species monitoring, environmental protection management and many other applications.

Współpraca polsko-białoruska w badaniach paleobotanicznych [Polish-Belarus cooperation in palaeobotanical investigations]
Ewa Zastawniak
The beginning of the Polish-Belorussian cooperation in the field of palaeobotany dates back to the 80-ties of the twenties century. Common studies, carried out since that time, concerned fi rst of all palaeocarpology of the Pleistocene (e.g. K. Mamakowa, F. Yu. Velichkevich) and late Neogene (F. Yu. Velichkevich, M. Lesiak, E. Zastawniak), Pleistocene and Holocene palynology (K. Mamakowa, T. B. Rylova, W. Granoszewski, M. Nita, I. Pidek, I. E. Savchenko, J. K. Jalovicheva, H. Winter, W. P. Zernitskaya) and fossil diatoms (G. K. Khursevich, B. Marciniak, W. Przybyłowska-Lange, S. F. Fedenya). The most important projects, which were realized by palaeobotanists from both countries in cooperation with geologists and geomorphologists from Poland (T. Kalicki, L. Lindner) and palaeontologists from Belorus (A. F. San’ko), focused on comparative studies and correlation of individual Pleistocene stages in neighbouring territories of Poland and Belarus. The outcome of the 20 years’ of close and many-themes cooperation are 91 mostly joint publications, the late prof. F. Yu. Velichkevich being the initiator and the main co-author of 32 of them. Several other subjects of common interest are now discussed and the realization of them will tighten scientifi c contacts between Polish and Belorussian palaeobotanists.
