Style, kompozycja i rewaloryzacja w polskiej sztuce ogrodowej [Slyles, composition and revalorization in the Polish garden art]
Janusz Bogdanowski
Although developing from 14th century in close connection with European garden-art, the Polish garden-art created its own original forms basing on the local tradition (Cracow centre). The Italian garden style predominated in Polish gardening from 14th to 17th century while the French style influences appeared in 18th century (Warsaw centre). New trends of landscape gardening connected with the English style began to dominate in 19th and 20th century. The paper presents twelve styles and forms most characteristic of Polish garden-art. They are as follows: medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, Angle-Chinese, Arcadian, romantic, naturalistic, calligraphic, secessionist (art-nouveau), modernistic, and contemporary (Fig. 3) Figures. 3-7 illustrate the main principles of composition and transformation of garden styles, and the problems connected with conservation of old parks and gardens.

Techniki badania allelopatii [Esperimental methods for the research of allelopathy]
Wiesław Oleszek
Increasing interest in advantageous and disadvantageous effects of allelopathy generates a necessity for the development of modern, simple and reliable techniques for their research. This paper describes in short the methods used for exploration of this phenomenon. Moreover, some biotests, most often used for the determination of allelopathic potential of plant natural products are presented. Alphabetically arranged list of newest literature positions cited, gives an outlook into methodological trends in this science area.

Fruktany [Fructans]
Grzegorz Marszałkowski, Romualda Karwowska
Fructans are polymers of a-D-fructose. They are widely distributed in the plant kingdom. They are present not only in mono- and dicotyledons but also in green and blue-green algae. Our knowledge concerning the biosynthesis and degradation of fructans comes mainly from the work of Edelman and his co-workers carried out with the inulin type polymers present in Jerusalem artichoke tubers (Helianthus tuberosus). There is only few studies concerning enzymes involved in the synthesis and degradation of the phlein type fructans, and the metabolism of the phlein fruetans has only recently been studied. In Jerusalem artichoke tubers, Edehnan and his group found several enzymes associated with fructan metabolism. In general, fructans are distributed throughout the plants in which they occur, although the amounts in different part of the same plant vary considerably. Usually their concentration in leaves is very small and especially large in roots, bulbs, tubers, rhizomes and sometimes in immature fruits. Big differences in their concentrations occur during onthogenesis of the plants. There are also differences in plants deriving from different geographical regions (Fig. 1).

Polarny transport auksyn w roślinach [Polar auxin transport in plants]
Wiesława Kuternozińska
Auxin transport plays an important role in the growth and development of plants. The transport is an energy-requiring process. Its rate depends on the metabolic activity of tissue. The effects of electrical field on the auxin transport and the experiments showing the presence of auxin-binding proteins in the plasma membrane indicate that the transport processes are repeated in each cell. Treatment of cells with auxin causes oscillations of both the pH of the cytoplasm and the concentration of calcium ions. Ca2+ ions are supposed to work as a second messenger for auxin. A model of the mechanism of auxin transport into plant cells and Ca2+ release from vacuoles into the cytoplasm is proposed. Local changes in the concentration of auxin in a whole organism can cause changes in auxin concentration in the cell followed by changes in Ca2+ concentration. At the present state of knowledge, however, it is difficult to connect cell responses with the genes whose expression is known to be regulated by auxin.

Zależności pomiędzy fotosyntezą i oddychaniem u roślin [Relationships between photosynthesis and respiration in plants]
Jerzy W. Poskuta
In the review presented below the following questions concerning the relationships between photosynthesis, photorespiration and respiration are discussed. 1. Chloroplast respiration (chlororespiration) as a process of supplying oxidative piridine nucleotide for dark chloroplastic metabolism. In broad term chlororespiration accounts for those processes in which reduced ferredoxin interacts with physiological electron transport acceptors other than NADP. 2. The relationships between electron transport coupled ATP synthesis either in mitochondria in the operation of oxidative phosphorylation or in chloroplasts in photosyntetic phosphorylation and roles of utilization of the assimilatory power in the processes of photorespiration and light enhanced dark C02 fixation. 3. A possible mechanisms of the occurrence of postillumination C02 burst /PIB/, in C-3 and C-4 plants, roles of light intensity. oxygen concentration, bicarbonate and operation of the “proton pump” in photosynthesizing and respiratory organelles of cell during light/dark transitions.
