Właściwości optyczne liści drzew i krzewów [Optical properties of tree and shrub leaves]
Marian Czarnowski
Green plant leaves are characterized by 4 essential optical properties: reflectance (R), transmittance (T), absorptance (A), and scattering (S) of irradiation. The leaves are structurally and functionally well adjusted to the absorption of solar irradiation in the 400-700 nm range. The photosynthetic rate in leaves depends on absorptance of the quantum irradiation and changes with wavelength. Determination of spectral properties (reflectance – R and transmittance – T) of leaves of various plant species can be carried out using the LI-18OO-12S external integrating sphere. The sphere is designed for use with an LI-18OO portable spectroradiometer (300-1100 nm) and LI-18SOO-1Oquartz fibre optic probe (LI-COR, USA). The spectral absorptance (A) is calculated from the formula: A = I – R – T. Considerable changes in the optical properties of tree and shrub leaves in the vegetation season have been observed. Physiologically active green leaves are characterized by the following optical properties: high absorptance in the PAR range (70-90%), high reflectance (45%) and transmittance (45%) in the near infrared, maximum PAR absorptance in the blue and red ranges and a decrease in absorptance in the green range, maximum PAR reflectance and transmittance at wavelengths from 540-560 nm, reflectance of the leaf blade underside higher by a few per cent. Owing to the degradation of chlorophyll and changes of colouring, tree and shrub leaves in the autumn have completely changed spectral characteristics. They still absorb in the blue range (400-500 nm) but with increasing wavelength the absorptance of irradiation gradually decreases.

Natura poliploidów [Nature of polyploids]
Marta Mizianty
Modern methods of botanical studies allowed to know better nature of polyploids and their significance in plant evolution. The main difference in old and new understanding of polyploidy lies in the interpretation of this phenomenon. At present we ought to treat poliploidy as a process and not as a singular fact of multiplication of chromosomes number. The phenomenon which in connection with the hybridization, reproduction and with the habitat, is the main cause of speciation. In the present paper there are presented some problems dealing with a classification of polyploids on the basis of chromosomes number, as well as with connection of their creation. There is also given a short summarizing information about polyploid complexes, paleopolyploids, neopolyploids, distribution of polyploids and polyploids in Gramineae.

Izoformy syntetazy glutaminowej w roślinach wyższych [Glutamine synthetase isoforms in higher plants]
Wiesław Bielawski
The main pathway of ammonia assimilation in the photosynthetizing organs of higher plants is the GS-GOGAT cycle (glutamine synthetase – glutamate synthase cycle). GS can appear in the form of cytosolic (GS I) or chloroplastic (GS2) enzyme. The synthesis of GS isoforms seems to be connected with photorespiration, phytochrome activity and the level of exogenous ammonium. The activities of GSI and GS2 are regulated by ions of bivalent metals, especially Mg2+. Mn2+ and C02+ and by compounds regulating the oxidation-reduction potential in the cell. Both GS isoforms are usually built from eight identical subunits arranged in flattened parallel to each other sets of tetramers. The main physiological function of GS2 seems to be the assimilation of the photorespiratory ammonium. The role of GS I is less well known althought the results obtained so far point to its participation in the assimilation of NH3 in the darkness or in the case of intensive fertilization of the plants with the ammonium form of nitrogen.

Wpływ niklu na aparat fotosyntetyczny roślin [Effect of nickel on the photosynthetic apparatus of plants]
Maria Drażkiewicz
Uptake of toxic amounts of Ni2 + by plants leads to quantitative changes in the structure of the photosynthetic apparatus of plants, as well as to an inhibition of the light and dark phase of photosynthesis. Quantitative changes in the chemical composition of the photosynthetic apparatus consist in a decrease of the level of chlorophyll, carotenoids, polar lipids and the electron carriers: ferredoxin, plastocyanin and cytochromes (b6, f. b559). Photosystem I and II differ in their sensitivity to Ni2 + action, but on the basis of the presented hitherto results we can not find unequivocally which of the photosystems is more sensitive to the action of this cation. Ni2 + causes also a decrease of the Calvin-Bensons cycle enzyme activity. net photosynthesis and potential photosynthetic activity of leaves (Rfd). The toxic effect of Ni2 + on photosynthesis is strenghtened when this cation is added in pair with Cu or Cd, but diminished by the presence of Fe, Cr or Pb.

Wpływ modyfikacji tradycyjnych metod gospodarowania na przemiany roślinności łąk z klasy Molinio-Arrhenatheretea [The effect of traditional managements methods modifications on changes in meadows of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class]
Beata Barabasz
easearches of last tens years showed very fast changes in meadow communities of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class, expressed mainly in rapid impoverishment of floristic composition and disappearing of existing species combinations. The relative stability of meadow communities depends both on the human management but is connected also with intrinsic population dynamics of meadow species. Human factor plays here the main part and such forms of activity are the most important: hay-making – one crop a year in meadows of Molinion alliance, two crops in meadows of Calthion alliance and sometimes even three in meadows of Arrhenatherion alliance, grazing – in autumn in hay-meadows of Arrhenatherion alliance and in spring and summer in pastures of Cynosurion alliance, manuring – organic (stable manure, compost, etc.) and mineral of all types of meadows of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class. Development of agriculture in last 20-30 years caused modification of these traditional ways of management. Result of both intensifications and cessation of grazing, hay-making or fertilizing is always the same – a decline in number of meadow species. Naturally, it causes the decrease in diversity of mammals, birds, and invertebrates living in this habitat. This effect is intensified, more or less consciously, by other man-made changes in natural environment like pollutions, land meliorations or irrigutions, river control, fires, etc. This phenomenon has assumed the alarming proportions, especially if not only plant species are taken into consideration but gene pools of the whole meadow ecosystems
