Ważniejsze jednostki miar i symbole stosowane w botanice eksperymentalnej [Important measure units and symbols used in experimental botany]
Marian Czarnecki
For more than 20 years it has been obligatory to use the Systeme International (SI) of Units for measure expressions in all fields of natural sciences. Looking through books and issues in the domain of experimental botany one may note that some authors and even editors do not use or only partially use SI units. The aim of this article is to remind readers the International System of Units, symbols, conversion factors, and selected measure units used in experimental botany. I hope that the list of measure units presented below will be helpful for many authors, especially those who will submit their papers to Polish and English scientific publication.

Ekologiczne znaczenie wielkości nasion [Ecological aspect of seed size]
Małgorzata Jankowska-Błaszczuk
This article is a review of papers which concern the life strategy, predation, possession of persistant seed bank in the evolution of seed size in flowering plants. Seed size is a very important element of adaptation strategy of many species. Possession of small, compact seeds is associated with ability to form the persistant seed bank. Seeds of species which lack seed banks are larger and often have hairs or awns. In many species small seeds are defence against predators.

Aeropalinologia – badania zawiesiny pyłku w powietrzu [Aeropalynology – investigation on airbome pollen]
Małgorzata Latałowa, Małgorzata Góra
The article presents the main aspects of aeropalynology. An outline of the history of the aerobiological studies and development of sampling methods with special reference to allergological investigations have been described. The importance of the airborne pollen monitoring have been emphasised. The pollen calendar for the most important trees and herbs elaborated for the Gdańsk-Gdynia area is discussed as an example of this kind of study. The usefulness of aeropalynological data collected by gravimetric methods to the palaeoecological reconstructions is shown.

Kwaśne fosfatazy roślin wyższych [Acid phosphatases from higher plants]
Mariusz Olczak
Plant acid phosphatases (AcPases, EC 3.1.3.2) are a group of enzymes that catalyse the hydrolysis of a variety of phosphate esters in acid environment. The enzymes are widely distributed in nature and appear to be ubiquitous, occurring in a broad variety of species and tissues. There are many reports on AcPases, but much of this information is fragmentary and the role of plant acid phosphatases are still not clear. Few complete studies have been reported but characteristics of the enzyme of system considered important by one reasercher may not be included by another. Two distinct categories of plant AcPases can apparently be distinguished. The first type are “non-specific enzymes” that show little or no substrate specificity. It’s possible, that they appear to be important in the production and recycling of inorganic phosphate in plant tissues. Second class of AcPases are specialised enzymes which have a clear, but non-absolute specificity. These AcPases are hypotsaized to have distinct metabolic functions and include: phosphoenolopyruvate phosphatase, phytase, phosphotyrosyl-protein phosphatase, phosphoglycolate phosphatase and 3-phosphoglycerate phosphatase. According to optimal pH for catalysis the enzymes have been classified as beeing alkaline or acid phosphatases. By contrast to acid phosphatases plant alkaline phosphatases usualy display an absolute substrate specyficity.
