Historia kaktusiarstwa w Polsce [A history of cactus collecting in Poland]
Bożena Dubielecka, Andrzej Kajetan Wróblewski
The earliest information about cacti grown in Poland dates from 1651. A catalogue of plants from the royal botanical garden in Warsaw published that year included Opuntia vulgaris. Cultivation of cacti in private botanical gardens of Jan Filip Breyne (1680–1764) and Jakub Klein (1685–1759) in Gdańsk is also documented. Later, when botanical gardens were organized in universities in Cracow, Warsaw, and Vilnius, cacti were also among the exotic plants grown there. In 1882 Józef Berger, a Warsaw printer and an amateur cactus grower, published Rodzina kaktusów (‘The Family of Cacti’), the first Polish book devoted to this plant group. It provided description of about one thousand species of cacti as well as useful information concerning their care and propagation. Cactus collecting became a very popular hobby after the World War I. In 1932 Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Kaktusów (Society of Cactus Friends) was established in Warsaw. Three years later it started publishing its annual bulletin Świat Kaktusów (The World of Cacti). Numerous books on cacti written by Polish authors were published before 1939. The World War II resulted in almost complete destruction of cactus collections in Poland. It took more than a decade until Polskie Towarzystwo Miłośników Kaktusów (Polish Cactus Society) was organized in 1966 and started publishing its bulletin under the historical title Świat Kaktusów. After more than four decades of its existence Polskie Towarzystwo Miłośników Kaktusów has several hundred active members organized in nine branches in Białystok, Gdańsk, Lublin, Łódź, Katowice, Poznań, Warsaw, Wrocław, and Zielona Góra.

Janusz Guzik
A. J. Żmuda was born on 15 May 1889 in Ludwinów village nearby Kraków (at that time Galicia, Austria-Hungary). This extraordinarily talented and diligent person, from his early years, was fond of nature, with a special interest towards mosses and vascular plants. A. J. Żmuda studied at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1907–1912, where since 1 November 1910 he occupied an assistant post in the Faculty of Botany. Since 1912 he worked under guidance of professor Marian Raciborski at the Institute and Botanical Garden of the University, revealing high scientifi c activity and organisational talent. Worth mentioning is his pioneer research in the fi elds of ecology and palaeobotany, studies on fl ora, vascular plants’ taxonomy as well as published collections: exsiccata of mosses (Bryotheca Polonica) and zoocecidia (Zoocecidia Poloniae). Drafted in June 1915 into the Austrian army, he did his military service in a bacteriological laboratory on Transylvanian front line, where he died in accident on 15 December 1916 in Medgyes (present Mediaş in Romania). His 30 publications (out of them 20 were original papers) warranted him a distinguished position in the history of the Polish botany.
