Szymon Syreniusz i jego dzieło [Simon Sirenius and his work]
Krzysztof Rostański
Simon Sirenius (Syreniusz in Polish) [ca 1540-1611], the famous Polish botanist and physician of Renaissance, studied medicine at first at the Cracow University, then (1569-1577) in Germany (Ingolstadt) and Italy (Padua), but he was interested especially in botany. He travelled over Germany, Italy and Switzerland visiting botanic gardens in Augsburg, Mainz, Heidelberg and Padua. During his stay in Western Europe he studied botanic literature of the 16th century and above all the works of Andrea Matthioli, the drawings of which were included later into his Herbal. After coming back to Poland he worked at the beginning as the physician in Lwów, making the botanic trips to Podolia, Volhynia and the Carpathians, the notices about plants growing there may be found in his Herbal. In 1588 he went to live to Cracow, where up to his death in 1611 he was the professor in the Faculty of Medicine of the Cracow University. Living in Cracow he worked out and prepared to print the work of his life – the Herbal. Unfortunately, this Herbal was printed after his death, in 1613 and edited by his friend and the successor in the Faculty of Medicine, Gabriel Joannicy, who attained a financial support for the costs of print from the Swedish princess Anna Vasa, the sister of the King of Poland, Sigismundus III Vasa. The Herbal by S. Sirenius belongs to the greatest botanic-medical works of the botany of European Renaissance (having 1581 pages and numerous illustrations), but being written in Polish it was distributed only in historical Poland and Russia. According to the last informations from the libraries, there are preserved up today together 94 copies, 87 in Poland and 7 in adjacent countries (3 in Kiev, Ukraine, 2 in St. Petersburg and 1 in Rostov/Don, Russia and 1 in Trokai, Lithuania).

Małe, izolowane populacje na skraju zasięgu geograficznego – niektóre procesy ekologiczne i genetyczne [Small, isolated plant populations at geographical range borders – some ecological and genetic processes]
Józef Mitka
Variation between plant populations of the same taxon has been investigated from the beginning of modern botany. Methods of allozyme polymorphism enable the deeper insight into genetic structure in marginal populations at species borders and those from the centre of species distributions. There are presumed some specific processes in marginal populations, e.g. environmental stochasticity and related ecological bottleneck, founder effect, genetic drift, inbreeding depression, high level of homozygosity and subsequent genetic erosion. Recently this problem is deeply penetrated with the aid of PCR methods. There are observed some discrepancies between the structure of genetic variation vs. morphometric variation of a population in various spatial scales. Genetic erosion in small and isolated at margin limits populations is observed in some circumstances. On the other hand, it seems that demographic and environmental factors (e.g. ecological bottleneck) may sometimes play greater role in determining extinction probabilities than population genetics. A promising field is the phenotypic plasticity studied across various environments, yielding information on reaction norms. A relation between quantitative variation of phenotypic characters and genetic variability (polymorphism) at various spatial scales and level of genetic variance in limiting traits at range margin remain open questions.

Plasmodesmy komórki roślinnej – współczesne poglądy na budowę i funkcje [Plasmodesmata of the plant cell – current opinion about structure and function]
Rafał Butowt
Current knowledge about cell junctions (called plasmodesmata) is reviewed. The role of plant and viral factors, which probably regulate plasmodesmata permeability, is discussed. An increase in plasmodesmata permeability accompanies for viral infection of plant cells. The movement proteins responsible for this phenomenon are encoded by viral genes. The role of the plasmodesmata in regulation of differentiation processes at the level of tissue and organ is emphasized.
