Rośliny arrasów wawelskich [Plants in the Flemish tapestries from Wawel Castle]
Anna Kostuch, Alicja Zemanek
The plants depicted in the 16th century Flemish tapestries kept at the Royal Castle at Wawel Hill in Cracow were analysed. The studies examined 87 tapestries in which 80 plant taxa were identified, out of them 48 to the species level. The ‘flora’ of the tapestries includes European species, as well as foreign plants originating mostly from America and Asia e.g. the maize or egg-plant. ‘Ecological’ view of nature, novel at that time, found its reflection in the presentation of various types of vegetation: temperate deciduous forest, South-European forest, aquatic plants. The painters who designed cartoons for the tapestries had a broad knowledge of plants which was derived from studying nature in Western Europe and the Mediterranean area. Cultivated and exotic species must have been observed in gardens, illustrated herbals or in catalogues of ornamental motifs, popular among the painters.

Rola cukrowców w roślinnych kulturach in vitro [Role of carbohydrates in plant tissue cultures]
Halina Bochnia, Lesław Przywara
Carbohydrates are necessary in living cells as a source of energy and carbon skeletons for biosynthetic processes. In tissue culture carbohydrates are also necessary as osmotic agents. Sucrose has been carbohydrate chosen in most of the experiments. It is assumed that sucrose is the best carbohydrate in culture media because it is the main transport form of carbohydrate in most species. Despite the widespread and succesfull use of sucrose, other sugars have been reported as being suitable carbon sources for tissue culture of many species. It was found that different patterns of morphogenesis were attributable to the type of carbohydrate and its concentration. In some experimental systems sugar is the key factor which determines the induction and type of morphogenetic phenomena. In this paper, the influence of carbon source on somatic embryogenesis, organogenesis, embryo culture, microspore and anther culture as well as on gynogenetic cultures was discussed. Moreover, some other aspects of tissue cultures connected with carbohydrates (media autoclaving, utilization of carbohydrates by cultured plant tissues) were also briefly presented.

Męska i żeńska sterylność u roślin kwiatowych [Male and female sterility in flowering plants]
Krystyna Winiarczyk
The knowledge of the female and male flowering plants sterility is of great importance for the developmental studies of stamen, pollen grain, ovule, embryo sac and embryo. It is especially useful for the evolutionary studies on the origin of dioecy and for the commercial application in hybrid seeds. Some studies investigating female and male sterility support the suggestion that there are involved in it more than one factor which influence the expression of plants sterility. Plant fertility depends on several different processes like photoperiod, mineral nutrition and physiological stresses. Nevertheles, the genotype of a plant is thought to be the most significant factor determining the development of the viable seeds.
