Ekologia populacji paprotników (Pteridophyta) [Ecology of pteridophytes (Pteridophyta) populations]
Joanna Cieszko
This article presents the short review of the problems connected with biology and ecology of Pteridophyta: dispersion of spores, gamethophytes population, architecture of the sporophyte individual, structure of population of sporophytes, relations between populations and their environment. The literature of this subject is very narrow and some problems are hardly known. Soil spore bank, ecology of gametophytes are the areas which still need to be investigated.

Grzyby kortycjoidalne polskich Karpat [The corticioid fungi of the Polish Carpathians]
Władysław Wojewoda
The present article provides a brief review on history of exploration on the corticioid fungi carried out in the Polish Carpathians, during the years 1888-1999. The region lies in Southern Poland at an altitude of 290-2499 m a.s.l. It comprises an area about 17130 km”, and is about 300 km long (from West to East), and about 35-100 km wide (from North to South). The list of 148 species (some mycorrhizal and parasitic, most saprobic) hitherto published from the Polish Carpathians is given. The intense mycological investigation carried out was concentrated in east regions these mountains, especially in the Bieszczady Mts. (95 species), and the Beskid Niski Mts. (73 species). 37 species are threatened [75].

Grzyby w upierzeniu i gniazdach ptaków [Fungi in bird plumage and nests]
Jan Pinowski, Barbara Pinowska, Andrzej Haman
The subject of this article is an overview of the general knowledge on the fungi living in plumage of birds and in their nests. The plumage of a living bird is not a good habitat for fungi because of high temperature, low humidity and uropygial gland oil cover, so only part of it can be colonized, and most specimens of fungi found there are in a dormant state. Fungal destruction of feathers on a living bird occurs very rarely, though it is possible, that it may contribute to ragged appearance of birds. The fungi of bird plumage vary among the seasons, with more fungi in the cold half of a year. The main sources of fungi in bird plumage are the air, the soil and also the nest. The most frequent genera are: Alternaria, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Rhizopus and Fusarium which are mostly inactive “passengers” of bird plumage, and keratinophilic genera Arthroderma, Chrysosporium and Trichophyton, which can actively grow on feathers. Birds can be carriers of fungi and can play significant role in their transmission over great distances. Fungi of bird nests vary according to bird species, nest localization, substrate, its pH and humidity, and the season. The dominant genera are: Alternaria, Penicillium, Aphanoascus, Fusarium, Mucor, and in nests lined with the keratinous material also keratinolytic genera Arthroderma and Chrysosporium. Most fungal growth in nests occurs after the fledging of the young birds, especially in autumn and winter.

Wpływ ołowiu na fotosyntezę [The effect of lead on photosynthesis]
Daria Słowik
The current knowledge on the effect of lead on photosynthesis is reviewed. Lead decreases the rate of photosynthesis. It is taken up mainly by roots of plants. Leaves accumulate only a little part of this toxicant. Lead impedes a synthesis of photosynthetic pigments. This may be a reason of decrease of photosynthesis, but there are other reasons of decrease of photosynthesis since some researches have found that lead doesn’t inhibit a synthesis of photosynthetic pigments. In light reactions lead restricts photosynthetic electrons transport, especially in PS H. Lead decreases the amount of LHC H proteins. The most sensitive is D1 protein of PS H. In dark reactions lead diminishes activity or synthesis of enzymes involved in this phase (RuBPC,E. CA.I.I.39 and PEPC,E. C.4.1.1.31). It seems that primary target of lead on photosynthesis are dark reactions.
