Motywy roślinne w dekoracjach krakowskich kamienic z przełomu XIX/XX wieku [Floral motives in the decoration of Kraków tenement houses of the turn of the 19th and 20th century]
Beata Makowska
National temperament and traditions added specific local quality to Poland’s architecture of the turn of the 19th century; this quality was supported by characteristically shaped details and ornaments. This can be very well illustrated by the work of Kraków architects who attempted to retain local and vernacular character of the architecture in that town. The so-called ‘Kraków school’ was well known for its attempts to create its own interpretation of immigration processes based on traditionalism, non-standard decorative quality and the presence of decorative elements characteristic for painting, which was decisive for the artistic expression of architecture. At that time, developers in Kraków began to build tenement houses of high technical and functional standards, with individual, valuable formal solutions. Decorations of facades of these tenement houses, made by renowned artisans, had considerable significance for the national heritage. Decorations of the discussed period combine geometrical motives typical for Viennese Art Nouveau with floral elements which are generally limited to clearly delineated areas. Geometrical ornaments often emphasise vertical lines, while floral elements typically stress horizontal directions. Characteristically enough, Kraków tenement houses were decorated with ornaments featuring typical plants of the region, such as the chestnut tree, maple tree, sunflower, tree branches and poppy plants. Other popular decorations included plants favoured by Art Nouveau for their lateral symmetry and many stems, such as irises, cyclamens, pansies and flowers of papilionaceous plants, but also asymmetrical flowers such as calla lilies etc. There also appeared motives featuring plants with rosette structure such as thistle, hound’s tongue and field rose. Verticalism, characteristic for Art Nouveau, manifested itself in the artists’ preference for flowers with high stems including lilies, irises, gladioluses, foxgloves, mulleins and rushes. On the other hand, fascination with twisting, spiral lines attracted them to creeper plants with flexible, wavy stems and spiral cirruses such as bindweed and grape vine. The beauty of plants always inspired artists and provided realms for their imagination. The logic and rhythms of the organic world played significant role in the process of creating the artistic order. According to J. Ruskin, every true work of art consists of two elements; the first one, of the mathematic character, gives origin to the category of beauty, while the other one, of organic nature, gives origin to the category of liveliness.

Intensywność przepływu genów u drzew leśnych [Gene flow capacity in forest trees]
Artur Dzialuk, Jarosław Burczyk
Plants disperse their genes during two independent life cycle stages: pollen dispersal before fertilization and seed dispersal after fertilization and embryo development. Dispersal of genes is an extremely important factor in shaping the genetic structure of forest tree populations. Patterns of gene flow between populations and differential reproductive success influence the levels of inbreeding, as well as effective population size and distribution of genetic diversity between and within populations. Potential gene flow (gene dispersal) refers to the deposition of the pollen and seeds from a source as a function of distance. Actual gene flow refers to the incidence of fertilization (in the case of pollen) and establishment of reproductive individuals (in the case of seeds) as a function of the distance from a source. Despite its important consequences for the genetic composition of tree populations, accurate estimates of gene flow rates are relatively rare. In this paper we review data on gene flow estimates in many forest trees species, indicating that gene flow in many cases is extensive.

Wspołpraca polsko-białoruska w badaniach flor makroskopowych czwartorzędu Polski [Polish-Belarussian cooperation in the investigation of the macroscopic floras of the Polish Quaternary]
Kazimiera Mamakowa, Feliks Ju. Velichkevich, Ewa Zastawniak
The history of investigations on plant macrofossils from deposits of the Quaternary (the last ca. 2 million years) in central-eastern Europe dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and is connected with the names of Professor Władysław Szafer from Kraków and Dr. Pawel I. Dorofeev from Sankt-Petersburg. Rich materials from many Polish localities, housed in the Paleobotanical Museum of the W. Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, were revised in 1990s by K. Mamakowa (Kraków) and F. Ju. Velichkevich (Minsk, Belarus). All collections of Mazovian and Eemian floras and most of the interstadial floras of the Last Glaciation, as well as some Holocene floras were revised. These studies resulted in the identification, among others, of the large group of new taxa for the Pleistocene floras of Poland, including extinct species, which threw a new light on the transformations of vegetation in that period.
