Botanika Renesansu w świetle współczesnej nauki [Renaissance botany in the light of contemporary science]
Alicja Zemenek
The paper presents the characteristics of botany during the Renaissance, when the first botanical institutions (chairs of medical botany, and botanical gardens) were founded, and some hundred works on plants (herbals, catalogues of plant names. and philosophical treatises on plants) were published. At that time investigations of European flora had been started, as well as the first observations of exotic plants, which had been imported from overseas, and cultivated in gardens. The first herbaria, and collections of plant drawings have been preserved as documentation of field investigations. Now interdisciplinary studies on Renaissance botany have been undertaken, which would be helpful in solving such problems as the history on plant cultivation, the changes to the natural environment during the centuries, the history of investigations into biodiversity, and the relationship between botany and human culture.

Kompleksowe badania naukowe na obszarze i w otoczeniu zespołu zbiorników wodnych Czorsztyn-Niedzica i Sromowce Wyżne [Scientific investigations in the Czorsztyn-Niedzica and Sromowce Wyżne water reservoirs complex and in their surroundings (Pieniny Mts., Southern Poland)]
Jerzy Wołek
Paper presents history of the project and construction of the dam reservoir near Czorsztyn and Niedzica in the vicinity of Pieniny National Park (Pieniny Mts., Southern Poland). The first concept of the water reservoir building dates back to the beginning of this century. From the very beginning this idea was opposed by naturalists. They were of the opinion that the construction and exploitation of the reservoir would be serious danger for unique flora, fauna and vegetation of the Pieniny Mts. and especially for Pieniny National Park which is one of the most valuable areas for science, culture and tourism in Poland. The project of the reservoir was also attacked from the point of geological view. Some geologists argued that it did not take into account the very complicated geological structure of this area. In 1964 the government decided to built the dam in the Pieniny region. The project of the “Czorsztyn-Niedzica and Sromowce Wyzne Water Reservoirs Complex” including a main reservoir of 234.5 mln m3 and a small one of 5.6 mln m3 for twenty four hour leveling was approved (Fig. I). The construction was to be completed during several years but works lasted much longer. In the meantime, protests against the dam construction continued. Now the reservoirs are filling with water. It is assumed that this process will be ended by 1997. Generally, it is believed that reservoirs will influence their surrounding, namely hydrology and mesoclimate. It is supposed that the climatic impact will be observed within the range of 5 km outside reservoirs. On the other hand, reservoirs and their surroundings will be contaminated by tourism, sports and recreation, local industry and agriculture. It seems likely that even little changes in natural environment caused by modification of hydrological and climatic conditions may give rise to significant qualitative and/or quantitative changes in species composition of local biocoenoses. They may also influence the unique plant and animal species in the region as well as endanger many valuable cultural and historical monuments. In this situation, the urgent need is to answer several basic questions, namely: 1. do the threats to unique species of the local flora and fauna increase? 2. are the ecosystem destabilisation and decrease in species richness in biocoenoses observed? 3. do the threats to the cultural and historical monuments increase? 4. have the negative changes in species, biocoenoses and cultural and historical monuments direct causal connection with the environmental changes observed caused by reservoirs? If the answers to the above questions are affirmative, results from the detailed investigations will allow to prepare the programme to eliminate or diminish the effects of the threats mentioned. Surveys of the local flora, fauna and biocoenoses were planed in two stages, before (stage 1) and after filling the reservoirs (stage 2). In the next years, during regular work of the reservoirs, periodical monitoring of selected biocoenoses as well as plant and animal populations is planed. First investigations began in 1963 [39] and results obtained were summed up in 1982 [41]. Because the construction of the reservoirs prolonged, the results were updated in 1992-1993. The most important results of the investigation, including threats to the local flora, fauna and biocoenoses as well as ways to eliminate or at least to soften the effects of the threats, were briefly discussed by Wołek [36]. Some detailed results have been published or are in press now.
