Sezonowość w średniowiecznym rolnictwie Bliskiego Wschodu na podstawie kalendarza syryjskiego zamieszczonego w dziele Kitab adżaib al-makluquat wa gharaib al-mawdżudat Al-Kazwiniego [Annual cycles in mediaeval agriculture in the Near East on the basis of a Syrian calendar published in al-Cazwini’s Kitab adjaib al-makluquat wa gharaib al-mawdjudat]
Adam Bieniek, Aldona Bieniek
Zakariya’ ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini (1203-1283 A. D.) was the author of the first systematic Arabic cosmography entitled Aja’ib al-makhluqat wa ghara ‘ib al-mawjudat (marvels of created things and their singuliarities). The work also contains some calendars used in 13th century in the Muslim world. One of them is the Syrian calendar widespread among Christian inhabitants of the empire. It includes much information about agriculture and its schedule all over the year.

Zaginiona monografia algologiczna Józefa Rostafińskiego [Lost algological monograph by Józef Rostafiński]
Tomasz Majewski
Józef Rostafińiski (1850-1928), professor of botany at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. was working several years on a large monograph of the Laminariaceae. Unfortunately, his planned publication was never printed, except of lithographic plates. Most of them are kept now in the Algological Laboratory, Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences.

Fizjologia roślin: wczoraj, dziś i jutro [Plant physiology: yesterday, today and tomorrow]
Zofia Starck, Barbara Niemyska
The very short history of plant physiology is presented. Looking back to the history of plant physiology, the dominant impression is that much important discoveries, concerning fundamental description of physiological processes were done during the first 30-50 years of the 20th century, in spite of very few number of plant physiologists at that time. In the next period our basic knowledge of plant processes increased very fast mainly due to improvement of experimental methods. Development of biochemistry and then molecular biology succesively dominated over plant physiology researches. In the last few years the tools of molecular biology, gene cloning and plant transformations allowed for unimaginable expansion of these plant field areas. This situation is reflected in journals, some of which becomes strictly biochemical or presented a great deal of papers concerning molecular biology at the cost of plant physiology. The increasing interest in molecular biology was accompanied by a shift from whole plant physiology to research in biochemistry and biophysics or molecular biology. Some scientists considered these disciplines almost as a synonim of plant physiology, whereas plant physiology is interested in individual proceses, especially in the whole integrated organism instead of isolated organs or even their part. Problems of plant physiology concern the whole, intact plant, and especially understanding the nature and integration of life processes as well as ability of plant to respond to fluctuation of the environmental conditions. In the very last period plant physiologists changed their view understanding, that development of plant physiology requires research at all levels: molecular, cellular, organismal and community. They try to co-operate more closely with molecular biologists. In the near future different biological discyplines should be closely integrated perhaps with the central position of plant physiology or new inter-disciplinary science of plant biology would be created.

Pobieranie jonów amonowych przez rośliny wyższe [Uptake of ammonium ions by higher plants]
Genowefa Kubik-Dobosz
This review describes the current investigations concerning the uptake and transport of NH4+ into root cells. During the past few years the mechanisms of ammonium uptake by higher plants have been characterised. It was found that uptake of ammonium is mediated by two functionally distinct plasma membrane-bound transport systems. One of them operates at low external concentrations of NH4+( 1 mM) and is mediated probably by ion channels.

Transport azotanów i jego regulacja w komórkach roślin wyższych [Nitrate uptake and its regulation in higher plants]
Grażyna Kłobus
Uptake of nitrate by roots followed by assimilation in plant cells is the main rout of mineral N conversion into organic N. Since nitrate, like other mineral nutrients required for optimal plant growth, is taken up from relatively low concentrated soil solutions, plants have developed high-performance uptake systems in root cells. Activity of nitrate uptake systems are regulated on transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels. Current knowledge about this regulation is discussed in presented paper.
