Rośliny na stacjach kosmicznych – fantazja, czy nowy kierunek rozwoju rolnictwa? [Plants on the spacecraft – a fantasy or the new trend in agriculture development]
Franciszek Dubert, Agnieszka Płażek
One of the factors most limiting the time of space journeys is the necessity of supplying of spacecraft crew in proper mass of food and carbon dioxide absorbers. In the presented paper the real possibility of solution of the problem have been discussed. Plant culture in space station during prolonged journeys permits to decrease their costs. Besides being food source plants assimilate carbon dioxide exhaled by cosmonauts and produce oxygen needed to respiration. According to authors’ opinion cereals and especially wheat seem to be the best for culture in the space station. However, this decision should be preceded by throughful studies performed in Earth’s conditions leading to breeding of plants characterized by optimal morphological an physiological traits. Key problem in the studies will be obtaining of plants of remarkable higher value of harvest index i.e. the share of consumable mass in whole plant mass. In the paper several possibilities of breeding of such plants have been described. Moreover, some technical and climatic factors of plant cultivation as well as solutions relating to utilization of post-harvest leftovers have been discussed. The article could be seemed by some Readers as an example of science fiction literature, however the authors used available knowledge allowing a realistic look into the future of space flights.

Motyw paproci w dekoracjach nagrobnych [Fern motiffs in tombstone ornaments]
Elżbieta Zenkteler
The manner of carving realistic ferns on gravestones dates back to Victorian England. In later periods, this style was copied and enriched at European graveyards. Impressive monuments raised in a Romantic manner were decorated by a set of such elements as a rustic cross situated at the top of a mound of stones, overgrown with ivy and with a clump of fern leaves at its base. This style of gravestones became quite common at Polish cemeteries in the 18th and the 19th century.

Rozwoj badań nad ramienicami (Charophyta) na terenie Polski [History of charophyte investigations in Poland – an overview]
Jacek Urbaniak
The present paper gives an overview of a long and interesting history of the charophyte investigation on the present territory of Poland. Today, over 450 papers referring to distribution and taxonomy of charophytes from Poland are available. The first notes about Polish charophytes were made in 1791 by Józef Jundziłł and only a few investigations done by Polish researchers have been done till 1850. At this time, till 1945 mainly German botanists investigated charophytes in brackish and fresh water. They made further regional and local surveys of the occurrence of charophytes. Some of them, Walter Migula, Aleksander Braun and Robert Caspary are widely known by all people dealing with charophytes. Monographs and exsiccata covering charophytes from Europe prepared e. g. by Braun, Rabenhorst and Sitzenberger (1857–1878) included material found in Poland. Studies on charophytes from the Baltic Sea were conducted after the II War by Polish botanists – Jan Kornaś and Anna Medwecka-Kornaś (1948, 1959, 1960), who first described new charophyte associations there. An active researcher and one of the leading botanists working with living charophytes from Poland was Izabela Dąmbska. She published a series of papers on charophyte ecology, systematics and vegetation. Her work “Charophyta – a determination key” (Dąmbska 1964a) was one of the most important steps to modern charophyte investigations in Poland. Also some other authors gave information on ecology and distribution of various species of charophytes, especially of the eastern part of Poland (e.g. Fijałkowski 1960, Karczmarz 1973, 1975). The first complete revision and summary of charophyte associations from Poland, was published by Dąmbska (1966). In this paper, several plant associations were recognized and described for the first time: Charetum rudis Dąmbska 1966, Charetum strigosae Dąmbska 1966 and Charetum tenuispinae Dąmbska 1966. At present, younger researchers continue the research on charophytes and new papers are published every year. Modern studies are focused on charophyte taxonomy, ecology, distribution and physiological aspects.

Barkoding DNA – nowe narzędzie do opisu bioróżnorodności [DNA barcoding – a new tool for description of biodiversity]
Zbigniew Mirek, Wojciech Bieniek, Agnieszka Sztorc
DNA barcoding is currently developing useful tool for species delimitation, description and identification. It uses a short gene sequence from a standardized position in the genome to identify species. Since DNA barcoding relies on DNA, identifying a specimen requires only a small amount of tissue and it may be carried on by non-specialists. So far DNA barcodes based on cytochrome c oxidase 1 (cox1) sequence have been applied to a diverse groups of animals. Additional sequence (ITS) have been proposed for fungi. On the other hand there is still not agreed DNA barcode standard for plants. The main international initiative created to develop and promote DNA barcoding is Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL). It coordinates activities of museums, herbaria, zoos, conservation research institutes, government agencies and other organizations dealing with biodiversity from all over the world. In 2005 the network of four institutions has been created in order to initiate DNA barcoding in Poland. W. Szafer Institute of Botany PAS in Krakow is here responsible for plant and fungi DNA barcoding.
