Acta Mycologica has been published since 1965, first as an annual, and since 1970 regularly as a semiannual. The papers published in the years 1965–1993 are in Polish, English and other congress languages. All the papers published afterwards are in English. The founder of the journal and its Editor-in-Chief in the years 1965–2001 was Alina Skirgiełło. Between 2002 and June 2014 the Editor-in-Chief had been Maria Ławrynowicz. Between July 2014 and April 2018 the Editor-in-Chief had been Maria Rudawska. In April 2018, Wojciech Pusz has been appointed as a new Editor-in-Chief.
Until 2013, electronic versions of the articles were published on the website of the W. Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 2015 the journal has been published exclusively in electronic edition.
