Dydaktyczna rola ogrodów botanicznych – stale aktualnym ich zadaniem [Educational role of botanical gardens – remains their actual duty]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
In the article the history of the botanical gardens is shortly described and their didactic functions are presented. From the XVI-th Century new botanical gardens were established with constantly increasing plant assortment, playing larger and larger didactic and social role. With the development of biological science new disciplines and corresponding botanical sections appeared (e.g. systematical, ecological. biology of plants, plant geography, variability of plants, protected plants, usable plants, decorative plants, plants form warm and torrid zones etc.). The increase in the social role of botanical gardens was conductive to introduce impressive botanical-horticulture designs as rock gardens, water basin, pergolas, collection of impressive species and group of plants ( rose-gardens, bulbous plant collections), water and aquatic plants, dendrological collections etc. Because of resignation from the idea of school gardens, botanical gardens have grown as the main source of plant material used for teaching purposes. The didactical role of botanical garden considerably increases when they can offer the conference hall and/or exposition hall which makes possible to organise lectures and exhibitions. Folders, guide-books, post-cards, slides, plans of sightseeing routes are very important in the didactic process, inducing scientific passion and making use of the collections more easy. Clear section and plant exposition arrangement and their good description increase the didactic value of botanical gardens.

Wpływ katastrofalnej suszy w latach 1982 i 1983 na wieloletnie gatunki zielne w rejonie Poznania [The influence of disastrous drought in the years 1982 and 1983 on the perennial herbaceous species in the Poznań region]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
During the investigations the most serious (during last 200 years) drought occur in the Poznań region. In 1982 the mean precipitation was 275 mm, in 1983 it was equal to 355.5 mm whereas the long term mean precipitation was 517 mm. Moreover, the greater part of falls happen in the winter. This drought resulted in about 50% of losses among the perennials. The investigations were carried out on 712 taxa, including 268 native ones. In this paper we present: 1. The influence of the long-lasting drought and high temperature on the herbaceous plants; 2. The influence of agents enhancing long-lasting drought and high temperature; 3. The influence of compensating agents; 4. The importance of the biological properties for the drought-resistance; 5. The classification of the taxa under investigations onto 3 groups of drought-resistance.

Odnawianie się z samosiewu obcych gatunków drzew i krzewów w Ogrodzie Botanicznym UAM w Poznaniu w roku 1984 [The revival of the foreign species of trees and bushes from self-seedlings in the Botanical Garden of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 1984]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
The weather conditions in the year 1993 favoured the nucleation and maturing of the seeds. and the abounding falls on May and June favoured their mass germination. After the investigations the introduced trees and bushes were divided into two groups: 1. Species with the intense germination; 2. Species with few or even single seedlings. Both groups contained species which were resistant to our severe winters as well as the species non-resistant to such conditions. The self-seeding was observed to be characteristic not only for the species but also for the cultivars. It is influenced mainly by the settlement conditions and by the large number of nucleated seeds.

Właściwości morfologiczno-rozwojowe Buglossoides purpurocaerulea (L.) J. M. Johnston oraz możliwość jego reintrodukcji i zachowania w warunkach ex situ [Morphological and developmental properties of Buglossoides purpurocaerulea (L.) J. M. Johnston and the possibilities of its reintroduction and maintenance under ex situ conditions]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
The investigations of morphologically-developmental properties of Buglossoides purpurocaerulea were performed in the years 1982–1984. These investigations led to following conclusions: 1. This plant represents the runner-shoot rhizocaulofites type; 2. Underground organs persist for about 20 years; 3. There are three kinds of overground shoots: a) generative shoots, b) vertical vegetative shoots, c) overground runners; 4. This plant propagates generatively as well as vegetatively; 5. The results of reintroduction of Buglossoides purpurocaerulea depends on the weather conditions during the vegetation period. 6. This species should be used as a practical covering plant for green belt.

Wpływ surowej zimy 1986/87 na drzewa i krzewy w Ogrodzie Botanicznym UAM w Poznaniu [The influence of severe winter 1986/87 on the trees and bushes in the Botanical Garden of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
The winter of 1986/87 was one of the strongest in our climate, with the minimum temperature –28.5°C (near the ground the temperature reached –32°C) and it caused substantial damage to plants (see Table 2). The kind of damage and its degree was influenced by: 1) biological properties of the plants, 2) the condition of the plants before this winter, 3) ecological conditions. It was stated, that the frost damage had an influence on the plant growth (delayed growth, attenuation of the vegetative growth, disappearance of the generative growth, changes in the rate and in the wav of the regeneration).

Wpływ nagłego spadku temperatury w styczniu 1985 roku na wybrane gatunki roślin szklarniowych na terenie Ogrodu Botanicznego UAM [The influence of the rapid decrease in temperature in January 1985 on the selected species of the greenhouse plants in the Botanical Garden of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
In the winter 1984/85 because of the heating system failure, the temperature in the greenhouses decreased to about 40°C and caused the serious damage of the plants in the collection. The plants of tropical and equatorial zone were most injured (with some exceptions). The damages of the plants from tropics were not so serious whereas the species from Mediterranean zone were not injured. The difference of the low temperature resistance with in plants belonging to particular zones and species was observed. Young plants were more sensitive than the old ones. Decay process was different for the plants from various species.

Sprawozdanie z działalności Rady Ogrodów Botanicznych i Arboretów przy Komitecie Botaniki PAN za lata 1978 do 1995 [Report on the activity of the Botanical Gardens and Arboreta Council of the Botanical Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, for the period 1978–1995]
Aleksander Łukasiewicz
There were two sessions of the Council every year. The autumn sessions, with the participation of the permanent members – the heads of Gardens and Arboreta, were devoted to the actual and general matter. The spring ones, with the participation of the stuff of Gardens and Arboreta, took place in different centres and it made possible to know their scientific and didactic activities and plant collection. The lectures and discussions were devoted to: scientific and didactic problems, problems of the Sections and plant expositions, organisational problems, problems related with law and instructions protecting botanical gardens, threads for these institutions, their co-operation, plant nomenclature as well as editing of the own publications (Biuletyn Ogrodów Botanicznych – Bulletin of the Botanical Gardens, and/or study entitled Ogrody Botaniczne i Arboreta w Polsce – Botanical Gardens and Arboreta in Poland).
