Motywy roślinne w herbach papieskich

Abstract

Herb, czyli znak rozpoznawczo-bojowy, wywodzi się z symboliki heroicznej lub znaków własnościowych. Początkami sięga I wyprawy krzyżowej, a jego wygląd jest ustalany przez reguły heraldyczne. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie rezultatów analizy floralnych mobiliów herbowych w herbach papieskich i wykrycie ewentualnych regularności w użyciu owych mobiliów. Analiza wykazała, że w herbach 40 papieży (na 207, którzy panowali od 575 r.) są aż 153 roślinne mobilia herbowe (ok. 3,8 mobilium na 1 herb; mediana: 2). Najwięcej (11) jest herbów zawierających po 3 mobilia, nieco mniej (10) – po 1 mobilium. Największe liczby mobiliów – 13 i 9 – występują w pojedynczych herbach. Wzorce roślinne tych mobiliów należą do 15 taksonów: 10 można przyporządkować do gatunku, 3 – do rodzaju i 2 – do rodziny; jedynie jeden herb zawiera niezidentyfikowane rośliny. Wyróżnione floralne mobilia herbowe należą do 6 elementów (części) roślin. Najwięcej wśród nich było kwiatów – 105 mobiliów w 27 herbach. Herby z motywami floralnymi były używane przede wszystkim w następujących okresach: 1250–1300, 1450–1600, 1850–1900 i 1950–2020. Najczęściej na herbach występowała lilia herbowa, czyli Iris pseudacorus – 64 razy w 16 herbach w latach 575–1978. Okazało się, że „Nardo” w herbie papieża Franciszka to Polianthes tuberosa, a nie Nardostachys grandiflora. Nie stwierdzono regularności w używaniu floralnych mobilów herbowych.

A coat of arms derives from heroic symbolism or proprietary marks. It dates back to the First Crusade, and its appearance is determined by heraldic rules. The purpose of this article is to present the results of an analysis of floral heraldic figures in papal coats of arms and to detect possible regularities in the use of these figures. The analysis showed that there are as many as 153 herbal figures (approx. 3.8 per one coat of arms; median: 2) in the coats of arms of 40 popes (out of the 207 who have ruled since 575). Most coats of arms (11) contain three figures; somewhat fewer (10) contain one figure. The largest number of figures – 13 and nine – occur in singular coats of arms. The plant patterns of these figures can be assigned to 15 taxa: 10 species, three genera, and two families; only one coat of arms contains unidentified plants. The floral figures distinguished belong to six elements (parts) of plants. Most of them are flowers – 105 figures in 27 coats of arms. Most often, emblems with floral elements were used in the following periods: 1250–1300, 1450–1600, 1850–1900, and 1950–2020. The most common one was the fleur-de-lis (Iris pseudacorus) – used 64 times in 16 coats of arms in the years 575–1978. The “nardo” in the coat of arms of Pope Francis turned out to be Polianthes tuberosa rather than Nardostachys grandiflora. No regularity was found in the use of floral figures.
