\nThe genus Acacia Mill. with almost 1400 species of woody plants is expected to be divided into several separate genera. Although, at present it is still considered a single genus, the unprecedented battle over the right of one of the anticipated segregates to the current generic name had already been fought. A hot debate on this issue, which involved scientist from all over the world as well as the general public, continued for over two years and was finally resolved during the last International Botanical Congress held in Vienna in July 2005.

\nMarkery DNA oparte na retrotranspozonach [Retrotransposon-based DNA markers]

\nRetrotransposons \u2013 Class I mobile genetic elements, are the main group of dispersed repeated sequences in eukaryotic genomes. They transpose via RNA intermediate with the use of reverse transcriptase. Retrotransposition leads to an increase of the retrotransposon copy number in the host genome. Thus it generates genetic variation that may be revealed by retrotransposon-based DNA markers systems. The range of available techniques include S-SAP \u2013 a modification of the AFLP method that shows fragments length polymorphisms between restriction sites and retrotransposon terminal sequences, IRAP and REMAP \u2013 two similar methods revealing length polymorphisms of fragments lying between retrotransposons and between retrotransposon and SSR loci, respectively. These three techniques provide dominant markers, while RBIP codominant markers show whether the retrotransposon is present or absent in the particular locus. Main applications and problems related to use of these markers are also described.
