Andrzej Nienartowicz, Halina Ratyńska, Marcin Szańkowski, Wojciech Szwed
During 70 years of phytosociological research in Poland, a great number of releves have been made. Up to now, they arc dispersed among various publications or remain unpublished in private data sets. It would be a benefit for further studies on vegetation if these large amounts of data were brought together into one data-base. This idea can be realized today using modern computer techniques which offer effective methods of storage and handling of large data sets. This paper calls for a standardized computer-aided system of geobotanical data collection in Poland, based on a general acceptance for: a single computer data-base system used to store and process releves, referred to the European standards; a single species list co-working with the data-base, including the entire Polish flora; unequivocal rules of cooperation and data exchange. Such a system will assure compatibility between local and regional data-bases, which will permit, in the future, setting up a national phytosociological bank. Currently there are several phytosociological data-base systems used in Poland (domestic and foreign ones). Two Dutch systems are in use: OPNAME in Poznań and TURBOVEG in Warsaw. Both of them are equipped with provisional species lists, which are incomplete regarding Polish flora. TURBOVEG is the newest unpublished product and perhaps the most advanced system in Europe. It allows to store up to 999 999 releves, The most developed domestic system is FITOT AX, elaborated at the University of Toruń. It includes both phytosociological and floristic databases, and is supplemented with the complete list of Polish vascular, bryophyte and lichen species including almost all synonymous names. The Warsaw product FITO is much simpler. It has been designed mainly for teaching and allows handling of small data sets. The newly elected Advisory Council of the Polish Geobotanical Society has placed computer aided data collection and handling among the most important topics in the nearest future. A special working group has been established, involving the authors of this paper.
Słowa kliczowe: geobotanical data, ordinating computere programs
Strony: 19-26

PDF
Zastosowanie testów glonowych do oceny żyzności i zanieczyszczenia wód dorzecza górnego biegu Wisły [Application of algal tests to evaluate of trophic level and pollution of waters from upper course of Vistula River catchment area]
Teresa Bednarz, Halina Bucka
The algal growth tests, in which different species of algae are cultivated in natural water permit to evaluate the potential water trophism and to show the presence of harmful pollutions in the water. Physiological processes and biochemical pathways leading to the maintenance or recovery of cellular homeostatsis in cells under stress, form the basis of stress-resistant genotypes. One of the stresses can be the presence of heavy metals. Generally, heavy metal resistance mechanisms can act along either of two strategies: stress avoidance or stress tolerance. Tolerance mechanism permit the plant to absorb the heavy metal ions, but act upon them in such a way as to minimize their effects. Avoidance mechanisms include different processes limiting the rate of uptake of the toxic ions into the cells. In this paper were described the main mechanisms of metal avoidance (external metal detoxification mechanisms). They include: 1) alteration of cell membrane permeability, 2) metal exclusion, 3) excretion of metal-complexing compounds, 4) external metal precipitation, 5) metal immobilization in the cell wall, 6) changes of redox state and pH of rhizosphere.
Słowa kluczowe: metal avoidance mechanisms, heavy metal tolerance
Strony: 33-40

PDF
Komputerowa baza danych zliczeń ziarn pyłku [Data base for pollen counts]
Adam Walanus
The computer program POLPAL (POLish-PALynological…) is generally described. Cereal grain contains proteins with inhibitory activity against a-amylases. The inhibitors from barley (BASI) and wheat (WASI), which are specific for endogenous a-amylase and for subtilisine, were isolated and well characterized. These proteins have Mr-20000 Da and pI-7,2. The amino acid composition and sequence show, that those inhibitors are homologous with the soyabean trypsin inhibitor (Kunitz) family. These inhibitors are active only against a-amylase of the high-pI isoensyme group. There are indicators that ABA is promoting the synthesis of those proteins. An endogenous a-amylase inhibitor from cereal seeds has recently gained much attention due to its possible negative effect on the activity during grain maturation, germination and sprouting.
Słowa kluczowe: proteinaceus inhibitor, a-amylase, cereal seeds
Strony: 59-68

PDF
Współczesne kierunki badań w taksonomii rodzaju Sphagnum L. Morphological criteria are still basic in the species concept in Sphagnum and other Bryophyta. They are based mostly on the structure of gametophyte. Specimens for studies were taken both from the natural habitat and from greenhouse culture, although the optimal conditions to grow Sphagnum species in the greenhouse are not yet established. Some authors take into account morphological and anatomical features and elaborate the results with statistic methods. In the field of taxonomic studies research on Bryophyta and particularly on Sphagnum there arc not many attempts to use other criteria based usually on evolutionary and biological species concepts.
