Organization of the Dendrology Section of the Polish Botanical Society (PBS) coincided with the beginning of the 50s of the twentieth century and was closely associated with the contemporary political situation in Poland. To put an end to the independence of the Polish Dendrological Society, existing since 1924, the communist government decided to dissolve it (detailed history of PDS can be found at http://www.ptd.pl/?page_id=5). Foundation of Dendrology Section within the PBS was enforced to take the members and property of the dissolved Society. This was done despite the apparent objection of the scientific community.
Reactivation of the PDS took place in 2009. Many dendrologists have become members of this Society benefiting from a great tradition, without giving up the PBS membership at the same time. The Dendrology Section of the PBS still existed, although there was no authority for several years.
Activity of the Dendrology Section management was resumed in June 2013, during the 56th Congress of the PBS in Olsztyn. Section has started a new period of its history, taking the labor to work out a new organizational and scientific achievements. Normalization of relations between the authorities of both the PBS and PDS and an explanation of initial confusions required a diplomacy and time. Recently, our relationships have become increasingly friendly. We look forward to further development of cooperation.
Members of the Dendrology Section of PBS deal with the following issues:
- morphological variation of woody plants,
- chorology and ecology of forest trees and shrubs,
- introduction, acclimatization and dynamics of alien tree and shrub species in forest environment,
- protection of forest vegetation,
- interactions between trees and insects, pathogenic fungi or pathogenic plants,
- genetic and phenotypic variation of forest tree populations and dynamics of their genetic structure.
